Duke University, Durham, North Carolina
I graduated in 1968 in political science, with minors in history and Spanish.
I participated in Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity, state student legislature, model
United Nations, and was president of the Duke Young Democrats. I was also a big fan of Duke Basketball!
University of Maryland Law School, Baltimore
I was associate editor of the Maryland Law Forum, then the only publication other than the law review.
I took clinical courses in the State's Attorneys Office in Baltimore City and had a summer internship
with the Bi-County Anti Fraud Task Force of the Montgomery & Prince Georges County State's
Attorneys Offices.
Municipality of Anchorage Law Department
From 1974 to 1977 I represented the property assessor, tax collector, treasurer, personnel office,
and human rights commission. I also prosecuted minor offenses in Anchorage district court.
Private Law Practice, Seattle and Anchorage
I opened my office in Seattle in 1978, and my first cases were in criminal law, bankruptcy, family law,
and personal injury. Soon I had my first immigration case and was hooked. I limited my practice by 1980,
and when I moved back to Anchorage in 1984 I was the only lawyer in Alaska who practised exclusively
immigration law.
